About Me
Matthew Collins is an artist who has divided his time between landscape painting and conceptual explorations in painting. His landscapes are painted freely with special attention to colour and paint application. The subject matter serves as a reference but is only of secondary importance. It is the act of painting itself that is Collins' main focus.
Matthew's other painting explorations have led him to another body of work that stands in direct opposition to his landscapes. These initial paintings involve the deliberate impersonal use of hand cut stencils and abstract patterns. Eventually more free hand and experimental paint applications started to appear in these works. As of late Matthew has incorporated the element of text for it's power of meaning as well as the aesthetic value of words. Collins considers his influences to come from a variety of sources such as art history, politics, advertising and his everyday rural surroundings.
Matthew has shown his work in solo and group shows along the South Shore, Halifax and Montreal. He received a Creation Grant from Arts Nova Scotia (2013) and had his work purchased by the Nova Scotia Art Bank (2013 and 2015). His work is represented by public, corporate and private collections in Canada, Holland, Germany and USA.
Collins was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia and continues to live in the area. He received his BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1998), where his main focus was painting and art history.
